Who is BG?

BG, or B Gopalakrishnan, is a multifaceted musician and trained Carnatic vocalist hailing from a family with deep musical roots. Born in Madurai, he spent his formative years in Karaikudi and Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, where he was exposed to music and completed his schooling and undergraduate studies. His grandfather, Madurai Shri PM VenkataKrishnan, and mother, Mrs. V Neelayathakshi, are both accomplished musicians. His mother and father Mr G Balasubramanian were instrumental in shaping his musical journey from an early age.

After finishing his schooling at Muthaiah Alagappa and Alagappa Schools in Karaikudi , BG pursued a degree in Bachelor of Technology from SASTRA University in Thanjavur. Before transitioning into a full-time music career, he worked with notable IT corporations like Wipro, Infosys, and a music tech startup, Artium Academy. Now, based in Chennai, he pursues music professionally.

BG trained in Carnatic music under the guidance of his mother, Smt. V. Neelayathakshi, and Mrs. Kothai Sudharsanam. His exposure to film music came through his father, Shri G. Balasubramanian.

BG received extensive training in advanced singing techniques and voice culture from the eminent ghazal and playback singer Padmashri Hariharan. Additionally, he has studied and collaborated with Mr. Ananth Vaidyanathan, often regarded as India's leading voice expert, on Voice Science.

He is an exceptionally versatile musician skilled in a wide range of singing genres. With a deep understanding of both classical and contemporary music, he has mastered various styles, from the intricate rhythms and structures of Carnatic music to the emotive and dynamic expressions of film music. His expertise spans across genres such as Indian Classical Music (Carnatic), film music, ghazals, fusion and devotional.

Currently, he serves as a voice trainer on Zee Tamil’s music reality show Saregamapa Lil Champs.

BG has undergone extensive training and research in voice culture and has conducted various workshops on the subject.

He has performed on over 300 stages worldwide, captivating audiences around the globe.

Having worked with some of the most renowned composers and music directors, BG has lent his vocal talent to a wide array of songs – both film and devotional. A director and composer, he has released six independent singles, all directed, composed, and featured by him. Recently, he composed a single titled "Idhu Nam Naadu," featuring prominent singers Srinivas, Vijay Prakash, and Sharanya Srinivas.

Quarantine From Reality (QFR)

BG is a regular performer in the widely acclaimed QFR series in Ragamalika TV, where he has delivered several memorable performances with numerous songs.

Sing In Sruthi (Season 2)

BG was crowned the winner of this season, competing against over 400 contestants worldwide. The contest was hosted on the Smule platform.
Saregamapa Seniors Season 3 (Zee Tamil)
Reached the pre-finals with 15 Golden Performances and 7 Best Performer Awards, along with being honored with the title of "Classical King." Praised as the "Monstrous Singer" by all the judges. Compliments by Eminent Playback Singer “Kalaimamani” Srinivas - B. Gopalakrishnan.
He is truly a monster musician who can sing the most complicated of classical songs.
To say, if he was around during the early 90s when ARR was giving breaks to so many of us, that he would have claimed numerous songs to his credit, would not be wrong.
The virutham that he sang of TR Mahalingam in the last competitive performance showcases his unparalleled talent, placing him as a singer who has no competition.
Hariyudan Naan (JAYA TV)
This reality show featured a unique concept of tutelage and competitive singing, led by Padmashree awardee Mr. Hariharan, the renowned ghazal and playback singer, with co-judges Mr. Sharreth and Mr. James Vasanthan, both celebrated music directors in the South Indian film industry.

Achievement
The competition began in 2010 with a staggering 10,000 contestants, and BG was among them, ultimately finishing as the "Runner-Up" in the grand finale held in Dubai, UAE, in 2011. Throughout the tenure of the reality show, BG had the privilege of being mentored by Mr. Hariharan, whose guidance helped him refine his singing skills and expand his musical knowledge.In recognition of the exceptional talents showcased in this event, a musical band “Harmony Un Limited” was formed by Mr. Hariharan and BG was selected to be a part of the seven-member band. The band has since performed at numerous shows.
Saregamapa Challenge 2009 (Zee Tamil)
BG performed alongside established playback singers and finished as the "Runner-Up"in the grand finale. The competition, which began in 2009, attracted an impressive 7,000 contestants.
Airtel Super Singer 2008 (Vijay TV)
BG took part in this prestigious reality show during its early stages, where he distinguished himself by securing a place in the top 18 from an initial pool of over 25,000 contestants.
Raagam-Sangeetham 2002 (Raj TV)
BG participated in this reality show that focused on Carnatic music and secured the second place in the grand finale.

BG, the recipient of the Manam Kavarndha Voice Trainer 2025 award in Zee Tamil Saregamapa, has garnered widespread recognition for his unique yet highly effective and efficient training techniques. His approach has helped and uplifted numerous contestants on the reality show, as well as many of his students worldwide.

This Carnatic Music course covers South Indian Classical music across three levels—Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced—and is taught by highly trained and expert musicians. It culminates in advanced topics such as Manodharmam and Ragam Thanam Pallavi.

Film Music

The Film Music course covers South Indian (Tamil) film music in all three levels—Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced—taught by skilled and highly experienced musicians. The curriculum includes advanced courses that teach decoding and mastering challenging film songs using proven techniques, designed to help students tackle even the most complex tracks.
